Trayvon Martin, Rest In Power

tonight, rage
hurl righteous fury
stand on your front porch
under the detroit slivered moon
yell the child's name
at the top of your lungs
TRAYVON
TRAYVON
TRAYVON
until the neighbors wake up
and the tears break through the rage

tomorrow, maybe
you will pick yourself up
build
rebuild
tucking brick
harvesting kale
mending frayed elbows and knees
maybe
remembering your freedom
was never granted
from above
but always
always
from below

cry yourself to sleep
cry yourself awake
trayvon grows in power
with each tear you shed
burns brighter

with each act of defiance
as he pulls you to your feet
stand up, people
keep going
jump to your feet and fight
